One of the craziest trade commodity has finally been shipped out to LA, so how do the losing Phillies currently sit.

After what seemed like every team under the sun would land him Manny Machado has finally been traded. From the Milwaukee Brewers to the New York Yankees to the Philadelphia Phillies, Machado appears to be heading to the Los Angeles Dodgers

Phillies fans went to sleep Monday night believing they would land Machado in return for Adonis Medina and a couple other prospects possibly including Jhaylin Ortiz, Cole Irvin and Franklyn Kilome. MLB.com reported the Phillies were heavy favorites and WIP tweeted this report.

Other sources quickly reported that the Orioles had a handshake deal, leading many to believe Machado the Philly was all but official. Everyone in Philadelphia could sleep easy, dreaming of the second half that was about to come.

But then we woke up.

Before we had time to congratulate ourselves Jon Heyman was reporting that Los Angeles was the real favorite and USA Today reported around 3 p.m. that Machado would be traded to the Dodgers following the All Star game, in which Machado went 0-2.

It is unclear what the whole package will be but Jon Heyman reported that it will only consist of prospects and that the Dodgers number four prospect Yusniel Diaz will headline the deal.

In other words, the Philadelphia Phillies failed.

Manny Machado was a must acquire. The Phillies are preparing for a second half pennant chase and having little to none offense produced from the shortstop position. Machado is in the midst of his best season to date; a .315/.387/.575 slash, all career highs, along with 24 home runs and 65 RBI. Meanwhile Scott Kingery and JP Crawford have combined for six home runs and 35 RBI. Kingery is hitting .237 compared to Crawford’s .194.

Now, I’m not saying that Klentak should have sold out the farm system. I loved not even thinking about selling Sixto Sanchez, and Adam Hasley and Alec Bohm were both obviously not going anywhere. While obviously do not know who was and wasn’t offered in negotiations. Was Mickey Moniak on the table? He is batting sub .250 in A ball for the second straight year, but could the ceiling of a former first overall pick not convince the Orioles into taking him.

Was Crawford not available? Kingery is already a valid backup option and if by some chance Machado did not return in free agency the Phillies would also be able to keep Cesar Hernandez, a far better offensive option, if Kingery had to make a full time move to short.

Machado would not be a rental player, although it is still very likely he comes to Philly in free agency. Did the possibilities of some prospects really over value the already superstar Machado. Not to mention that a strong October run would help convince Machado to stay.

Now Machado suits up for the team the Phillies are currently projected to play in the first round of the playoffs. Seemingly hours from acquiring what would be the biggest bat in the lineup the Dodgers came and snatched Machado right from our hands.

The Phillies missed out on what would have been the biggest trade acquisition in recent years for the team. Now the Phillies gear up for a second half playoff run short handed. While missing out on Machado was a failure there is still more to look forward to then any year since 2012.

The biggest question October will be how much Klentak regrets letting Machado slip away.
