The Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals were hoping to resume their series at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night. Mother Nature had other ideas, unfortunately, with the Phillies announcing that the second game of the series has been postponed due to wet weather in the Philadelphia area all day.

With the game originally scheduled for a 6:45 p.m. ET first pitch, the Phillies were hoping to put a stop to the Cardinals' nine-game winning streak. They'll have to wait until Wednesday, when the teams will try to get in a split doubleheader.

Phillies vs. Cardinals Rainout: Full details, weather forecast, schedule changes for postponed game

It didn't come as a big surprise when the Phillies made the official announcement on their social media accounts. With the forecast for Tuesday calling for rain all day and through the evening, a delay would have been inevitable if they had tried to go ahead.

The question now becomes: Will the Phillies and Cardinals be able to get both games in on Wednesday?

They were scheduled to play the series finale on Wednesday, and that will still happen at 1:05 p.m. ET, with the postponed contest starting at 6:15 p.m. ET as part of a split day/night doubleheader, per MLB.com.

With the Phillies are Cardinals having already met in April, this is their last meeting of the season, so another postponement on Wednesday would wreak havoc on the schedule. Both teams do have an off day on Thursday, but they will do everything in their power to get both games in to avoid ruining travel and off-day plans.

The good news is that, according to our friends at The Weather Channel, the rain will continue through the night but subside late Wednesday morning, hopefully.

Phillies vs. Cardinals Rainout: Phillies looking to win sixth straight series after postponement

The Phillies will be looking to even the series at one game apiece in the afternoon on Wednesday, after dropping Monday's opener 3-2. Bryce Harper even buzzed his hair off for that one, but it didn't matter. The loss dropped the Phillies to 2.5 games behind the New York Mets for first in the NL East. They'll have to win the next two to secure their sixth straight series win.

Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez put together another quality start, allowing two runs over six innings while striking out eight. Reliever Matt Strahm made one mistake to Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn, who hit what turned out to be a game-winning solo home run in the seventh inning.

The Phillies had opportunities to score, but the bats sputtered when they had chances. They went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base. They managed their two runs on a bobbled ball on an Edmundo grounder at third by Nolan Arenado in the fourth and a J.T. Realmuto ground out in the sixth.

Jesús Luzardo, who was scheduled to start Tuesday's game, will be the Phillies' starter in the Wednesday afternoon affair, while Aaron Nola is scheduled to start the evening game, per The Philadelphia Inquirer's Scott Lauber.

Luzardo has a 1.21 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 47 innings this season. He's coming off a no-decision after holding the Tamp Bay Rays to two runs on six hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings. Luzardo missed the Cardinals the first time around this season, so this will be his first start against them since 2023 when he went 1-0 in two outings.

Veteran Sonny Gray was scheduled to take the ball for the Cardinals on Tuesday, and will likely match up against Luzardo in the afternoon. Erick Fedde, who was St. Louis' probable starter for the series finale, will likely get the call for the evening game.
