Among the many tense moments during the Philadelphia Phillies' divisional game against the New York Mets on Thursday, none were more severe than the brutal collision that took place during the sixth inning at Citi Field. Mets infielder Jared Young collided with Mets right-hander Nolan McLean at first base, causing Young to be taken out of the game on a stretcher with an apparent head injury.
Putting aside the rivalry, Phillies fans could all collectively exhale knowing that Young was reportedly doing better after the game.
Jared Young's CT scan came back negative. He's still exhibiting concussion symptoms, but "he is showing really good signs right now," per Andy Green. The Mets are optimistic Young has avoided the worst outcomes.

Thankfully, an update later provided by MLB.com's Anthony DiComo from Mets interim manager Andy Green stated that CT scans came back negative for Young and that he's currently dealing with concussion-like symptoms. This information was provided after Young had already been transported to the hospital for further evaluation during Thursday's game.
Moments like Jared Young injury during Phillies-Mets are bigger than baseball
Collisions used to be more prevalent in baseball, but rule changes have rightfully limited the sight of these for baseball fans. Unfortunately, this injury was just a freak accident with both players trying to make the play at the same time.
It doesn't make it any less scary. Instead, the rarity of the occasion magnifies the surrounding fear. Phillies fans know what's at stake during this last road trip of the 2026 regular season, but on a human level, all baseball fans feel it when we see any MLB player go down from something traumatic or even potentially career-altering.

During the postgame interview, Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper was initially asked about Aaron Nola's seven shutout innings but took the time to wish Young well.
“Yeah, first of all, Jared Young, man, I hope he's okay," Harper began. "God be with him and his family name I just hope he's okay.”

The Philadelphia Phillies are fighting for their playoff lives and are in a tense environment facing off against the Mets, a team that has always been a thorn in the Phillies' side when playing in New York. They've been a combined 9-22 in Queens since 2022. That all came to a halt once McLean's knee collided with Young's head on the scramble play from that Justin Crawford single.
At the time, the game was a 1-0 pitching duel, with the Phillies eventually winning 3-0, whittling the Phillies' magic number down to five. The Phillies won, but the real win is knowing that Young is improving and avoided the worst, with hopefully better news to come.
