Overlooked Phillies stabilizer is quickly becoming an extension candidate

It's hard to argue against it.

There didn't seem to be much faith put into Brandon Marsh to start the 2026 season. Marsh wasn't necessarily a WAR darling in 2025, but he put up solid enough numbers for Phillies fans to feel comfortable with him being in the lineup for another season.

But then Marsh had a couple of bad mental errors early on in 2026, which put fans in panic mode as the entire team produced an awful record out of the gate. But let's not get too hasty on Brandon Marsh. He is a light in what's been mostly a nightmare season in Philadelphia. Entering the weekend, he'd already racked up 1.2 bWAR and a 135 OPS+ through his first 34 games.

So, wait a second, maybe Marsh is actually good? It's time for the franchise to make a decision on where they stand with him soon. Marsh is under team control for the next 1.5 seasons through 2027. Perhaps the 28-year-old outfielder is worth extending. You can't say that about too many other players on the team.

Brandon Marsh has been an underrated player for the Phillies in 2026

Marsh entered May 8 riding a nine-game hitting streak under the Don Mattingly Regime, batting 14-for-32 (.438) with three doubles and a triple. His .863 OPS this year is seventh among National League outfielders, and his 41 hits only trail Andy Pages (46) and Jordan Walker (42). Whoa. Marsh is in some pretty elite company right now, and it is definitely easy to overlook his production with everything else going on.

The Phillies are still under .500 despite a nice run over the last week-and-a-half. The main focus is on the team winning. From that, it's easy to keep track of stars like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner. But let's not forget about Marsh. He very well could be in this core of players for the near future. At the very least, he deserves to be considered among that pack.

So, what have you? Do we think that Marsh deserves an extension? If so, at what cost? And for how long? A three-year extension in the ballpark of $12-$16 million per season seems fair, though Marsh's agent may want to go for more than that. We can't blame them.
