The Philadelphia Phillies took on the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland, Florida in an ESPN-televised spring training matchup on Wednesday, with offseason trade acquisition Jesús Luzardo toeing the rubber for the Phillies. Following rough performances from Luzardo and reliever Matt Strahm, the Phillies trailed the Tigers 12-0 by the end of the third inning. It wouldn't get much better from there.

Travelling with a squad that included veterans Nick Castellanos, Edmundo Sosa, and Kody Clemens, the Phillies pitching staff came apart at the seams in the second inning while Phillies manager Rob Thomson was mic'd up for an in-game interview the skipper would probably rather forget.

Let's just say it was an interview that took an awkward turn after three consecutive pitches in the second inning.

Wednesday marked the second spring training start for Phillies left-hander Jesús Luzardo, who was acquired in a four-player trade with the Miami Marlins in December. Luzardo was solid in his spring training debut, going 2.0 innings against the Red Sox on Feb. 28, striking out two without allowing a hit or a run. Unfortunately, things would not go so smoothly for Luzardo during his two innings of work against Detroit in this one.

With his manager Rob Thomson mic'd up with members of ESPN's telecast, Luzardo took the mound for his second inning of work after working a scoreless first. As Thomson was answering questions about his lineup and the health of Taijuan Walker, Luzardo created a very uncomfortable situation for his manager after he allowed three home runs on three consecutive pitches.

Resigned to his awkward position of being on camera while Luzardo was getting shelled, Thomson could only sit back and watch as Tigers hitters Jahmai Jones, Andy Ibañez, and Gleyber Torres took Luzardo out of the yard for back-to-back-to-back home runs.

After all was said and done, Luzardo would exit the game after two innings with a miserable statline of 2.0 innings pitched, six hits, six earned runs, three home runs allowed, one walk, and two strikeouts.

While it's still only spring training and pitchers are usually still working on certain pitches and pitching mechanics at this point, Luzardo's shambolic second inning was obviously no marker for what he will do on the mound this season when the games count. Still, it's safe to say Wednesday's ugly performance against the Tigers is one of those he'll be trying to forget.
