2026 marks a contract year for Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm. Bohm has been with the Phillies since 2020, but comes into this season looking to earn himself a big payday for next season either with the Phillies or another organization. Bohm faced another troubled offseason filled with trade talks, but is now in the middle of a legal battle with his parents. With Bohm juggling all of this, he still managed to break through on Opening Day with a massive home run.

On Wednesday, knowledge of a lawsuit that Bohm has filed against his parents, Daniel and Lisa Bohm, seeking $3 million in judgment, hit the airwaves. The lawsuit alleges that they mismanaged his finances and misrepresented the nature of the transactions that were done on Bohm's behalf through LLCs ever since he was drafted. Despite the personal battle, Bohm didn't want to get into detail after the Phillies 5-3 win over the Texas Rangers, per Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.

“I’m not going to address any personal matters right now,” he said, per Varnes.

Bohm persevered and had a great start to a hopeful contract season with Phillies

In the win on Thursday, the Phillies were hanging onto a slim 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Rangers' starter Nathan Eovaldi was still in the game after keeping the Phillies scoreless following the first inning. He then threw a 2-0 90.8 mph cutter over the heart of the plate, and Bohm drove it over the right field fence for a three-run home run. It ended the day for Eovaldi and put an exclamation point on a season debut for Bohm in which he went 1-for-3 with a walk, run, and three RBI.

Bohm didn't hit his first home run last season since May 6, so this could be a sign of Bohm trying to lift the ball more to be a run producer as the Phillies cleanup hitter. In 2025, Bohm hit .287, but only managed 11 home runs, 59 RBI, and a .741 OPS. The Phillies would love a higher power output from Bohm, something he showed in spring training.

Now Bohm is facing an even tougher challenge outside just baseball. He has the pressure of an ongoing family legal battle, plus the last shot at proving his value as a big league third baseman before hitting the open market. It's surely weighing on his mind, but Thursday showed that he's trying to put that all behind him and focus on his play for the 2026 MLB season.
