Six things we learned from Phillies big series win over the Brewers

The aces won’t be perfect every time
One of the reasons that the Phillies rotation has done so well this year is that they have not one, but two ace-quality pitchers in the rotation this year. Both Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta have done very well on the mound this year, with Nola emerging as a top-tier pitcher in the league. However, this weekend in Milwaukee did not treat either of them well.

The Brewers plated eight runs against Arrieta Friday night on seven hits and two walks in just 3.1 innings. Arrieta certainly wasn’t helped by his defense as they made three errors behind him, leading to four unearned runs. It was Arrieta’s third straight loss and his second since complaining about the team’s defensive shifts.
Sunday was not a great day for Nola either. He simply didn’t have his best stuff, giving up four runs in just 4.1 innings.
Nola allowed seven hits and four runs, the most combined walks and hits in one start he has had since May 13. It was his shortest start in over a year and just the second time this season he allowed four runs. Nola took a no-decision in the 10-9 win.
For all the success the two pitchers have had this season, they reminded us this weekend that even the best still can struggle.
