The Phillies and Nationals meet for their fourth series of the season – four too many – as Philadelphia hopes to change their fortune.

Friday night’s game between the Phillies and Nationals has indeed been cancelled. It will be made up in a doubleheader Sunday. Most of the information below will likely apply to Saturday night.

The Phillies and Nationals have already played nine games against each other this season with three more games set to be finished by the end of the weekend. The teams have been fairly even at with the Phils taking four wins and the Nats taking five. However, Washington has had a far better season while Philadelphia is struggling once again.

Weather

Friday night is expected to be a wet one in Washington with precipitation expected throughout game time. It is expected to roll well through the night and into the morning, so all of this preview jargon could go for naught.

Meghan Montemurro of the News Journal says today’s game may be canceled and move to a doubleheader Sunday.

Starting Lineups

More from Phillies News

Philadelphia:

  1. 2B Cesar Hernandez
  2. CF Odubel Herrera
  3. LF Aaron Altherr
  4. 1B Tommy Joseph
  5. RF Michael Saunders
  6. 3B Maikel Franco
  7. C Cameron Rupp
  8. SS Freddy Galvis
  9. RHP Nick Pivetta

Manager Pete Mackanin’s first lineup since receiving his two-year extension sees a major shift as Maikel Franco has been moved out of the cleanup spot. Mackanin bumped up Tommy Joseph and Michael Saunders while sliding Franco to the No. 6 spot. He also seems to like Aaron Altherr as the No. 3 hitter with Odubel Herrera hitting second.

The Phils were fortunate enough to not face Bryce Harper in their last series with Washington, but they won’t be so lucky this time. He spearheads the new Murderer’s Row alongside Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy.

Starting Pitchers

Nick Pivetta gets to face the Nationals again after giving up three home runs and four runs overall in five innings in his last start. Total, he has a 5.40 ERA in ten major-league innings. Pivetta has yet to hit the sixth inning in his major-league career. This may be his last start in place of Aaron Nola as Nola made his first rehab start Wednesday night.
