Phillies pitcher Zach Eflin is back on the disabled list with an unknown injury. The righty made one start after returning to Triple-A last week.

Zach Eflin is once again on the disabled list with an undetermined injury. The Phillies quietly made the move after Eflin’s last Triple-A start Friday.

Eflin struggled in his last start with the IronPigs, his first since being optioned back to the minors. Eflin gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk in four innings. He didn’t give up any runs in his first two minor-league starts this season, but this most recent one rose his ERA for the year at Lehigh Valley to 2.57.

Eflin made eight starts with the major-league club this season after Clay Buchholz landed on the 60-day disabled list. He had a 6.13 ERA, 5.92 FIP, and 1.43 WHIP in 47 innings. He was worth -0.2 fWAR.

In his last three starts, Eflin had a 13.20 ERA, giving up 22 runs in 15 innings. He gave up three runs in his May 23 start against the Rockies and four May 28 against the Reds.

The hope is that this injury doesn’t have anything to deal with Eflin’s knees. He missed the last two months of the season dealing with chronic tendinitis in his knees. Eflin had surgery during the offseason to repair both of his knees.

Eflin didn’t pitch with the major-league team during spring training but saw some action with the minor-league team. He started the year on the disabled list but made his Triple-A debut this year April 11. With Buchholz getting injured so early on in the season, Eflin didn’t get much time in the minors this year.

With Eflin now out of commission for some time, the Triple-A rotation is missing several arms. Ben Lively and Nick Pivetta are both in the majors, leaving Mark Appel, Jake Thompson and Thomas Eshleman in the rotation.

Ricardo Pinto and Mark Leiter, Jr. are back in Triple-A after working from the major-league bullpen. Both could work out of the rotation again for the IronPigs.
