The Philadelphia Phillies (2-4) travel to the nation's capital on Friday to begin a three-game series against the division rival Washington Nationals (2-4). The Phillies are still looking for their first series win after dropping the series with the Cincinnati Reds 2-1.
Apart from Bryce Harper's monster three-home run game on Tuesday, the Philadelphia offense has looked rough early in the season. The bats couldn't scrape together enough runs to support Zack Wheeler's 10-strikeout outing on Wednesday.
You'd be forgiven for completely forgetting that there is a game this evening, with all the hoopla around the Phillies' unveiling of their City Connect uniforms today. The Phillies won't wear the new uniforms tonight but will don them next Friday at home.
Phillies vs. Nationals probable pitchers
- Aaron Nola will look to avenge his less-than-stellar season debut against the Atlanta Braves. The 30-year-old went 4 1/3 innings last Saturday but got tagged for seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits while only striking out three. Nola took a no-decision in his one start against Washington in 2023. He threw five innings, only surrendering one run on five hits while striking out six. Fans are hoping for a better performance tonight.
- Patrick Corbin, 34, will start for the Nationals. The left-hander got rocked in his season debut, giving up four runs on seven hits and two home runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Last season, Corbin faced the Phillies once, taking a no-decision. He went five innings and only gave up one run on one hit but walked seven with just two strikeouts.
Phillies vs. Nationals injury updates
- The Phillies are still without pitchers Taijuan Walker (shoulder impingement), Orion Kerkering (strained forearm), and Luis F. Ortiz (sprained ankle).
- The Nationals are without third baseman Nick Senzel (fractured thumb) and outfielders Stone Garrett (fractured leg) and Victor Robles (strained hamstring).
