Phillies vs. Braves: Lineups, how to watch, injury updates for March 31
The Phillies will be without Bryce Harper for the series finale against the Braves.
The Philadelphia Phillies (0-2) will try to salvage the final game of their opening weekend series against the Atlanta Braves (2-0) on Sunday. Similar to Game 1, not much went right for the home team in Saturday’s 12-4 loss. Aaron Nola looked pedestrian and the Braves bats just kept chipping away at Phillies pitching.
The Phillies have now been outscored 21-7 over the first two games of the new season and could use a win to really boost the spirits of a demoralized fanbase.
Phillies vs. Braves probable pitchers
- Ranger Suárez gets the start for the Phillies. The left-hander had a sensational spring and will need to carry that over into the regular season for his team to pull out a win. Suárez pitched to a 0.00 ERA and 0.60 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 15 innings of spring training action.
- Chris Sale will take the ball for Braves manager Brian Snitker. During spring training, the 35-year-old lefty looked like the dominant version of the pitcher he once was. He finished with a 3.80 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.
Phillies vs. Braves injury updates
- Phillies relief pitcher Luis Ortiz has been placed on the 15-day IL. He left Saturday’s game with a sprained left ankle, per MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, after landing awkwardly on the mound after jumping for a ball. The Phillies have called up right-hander Nick Nelson to take his place as the long-man in the bullpen.
- Bryce Harper is out of the lineup on Sunday, but luckily it sounds like it isn't related to his scary fall into the camera well during Saturday's game. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer's Scott Lauber, manager Rob Thomson said it's a scheduled day off based on Harper's stunted spring training from his stiff back.
