The Philadelphia Phillies (24-11) won their fifth straight game and ninth in a row at home on Sunday. The 5-4 win against the San Francisco Giants (15-20), who probably can't wait to get out of Philadelphia, pushed the Phillies' lead in the NL East to 2.5 games over the Atlanta Braves.
Taijuan Walker was solid in his start. He went 6 1/3, allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Alec Bohm extended his hit streak to 18 games with a seventh-inning double. Bryce Harper did prime-time Bryce Harper things, blasting a three-run home run in the third inning on Sunday Night Baseball.
Now, the Phillies will go for the series sweep on Monday before welcoming the struggling Toronto Blue Jays to town for a two-game set.
Phillies vs. Giants probable pitchers, May 6
- Ace Zack Wheeler (3-3) will start the series finale today, on regular rest. A winner of three straight, Wheeler will bring his 1.91 ERA and 0.92 WHIP into Monday's contest. He had to grind through five innings in his last start against the Los Angeles Angels but still allowed just one run and struck out six. The right-hander lost his lone start against the Giants last season, giving up four runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts over six innings.
- Mason Black (0-0) will counter for the Giants in his MLB debut. The Scranton, Pa. native will face the team he grew up cheering for after being called up following Sunday's game. The 24-year-old righty has a 1.01 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with 29 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings over six starts with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats in the notoriously hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
