The Philadelphia Phillies (16-10) start a six-game West Coast swing on Friday night, opening a three-game series against the San Diego Padres (14-14) at Petco Park. The Phillies closed out their four games in Cincinnati with a convincing 5-0 win over the Reds on Thursday. Bryce Harper returned from the paternity list with a big day at the plate, and Zack Wheeler did Zack Wheeler things.

With the Braves idle, the Phillies gained in the NL East standings and are now 2.5 games behind Atlanta. At .500, the Padres are 2.5 games back of the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. Coming off a series split with the Colorado Rockies after a series loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, they're 5-5 in their last 10 games and 6-8 at home this season. The Phillies went 5-2 against the Friars in 2023.

Phillies vs. Padres probable pitchers, April 26

  • Aaron Nola (3-1) will take the ball to open the series against the Padres tonight. Coming in with a 3.16 ERA, Nola has gradually lowered that mark since his season debut. He's coming off his best start on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox. He gave up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over eight innings. The right-hander has a career-low K/9 (7.47) but is making up for that with his highest ground ball rate (48.9 percent) since 2020.
  • Joe Musgrove (3-2) has had a shaky start to the season. The 31-year-old right-hander has a winning record despite a 5.74 ERA and 1.53 WHIP through six starts. He has allowed three or more runs in all but one outing so far. His longest outing came in his most recent start when he gave up three runs on five hits in seven innings against the Jays. Like Nola, he's running a career-low K/9 (6.61) but has his highest BB/9 (3.16) since 2020.
