Philadelphia Phillies probable pitchers & starting lineups vs Chicago Cubs, July 3
The Phillies go for the series win against the Cubs with Zack Wheeler on the mound.
The Philadelphia Phillies (56-29) started July on a good note and will square off against the Chicago Cubs (39-47) in the second game of their three-game set on Wednesday at Wrigley Field.
Michael Mercado picked up the win on Tuesday, the first of his major league career, after the Phillies hung on for a 6-4 victory. He went five innings, calmly holding the Cubs to one run on two hits while striking out four and walking two. Not too shabby for his first MLB start.
Powered by Trea Turner's two home runs and four RBI, the offense cruised to a 6-1 lead into the ninth before reliever José Ruiz gave up three straight hits, including a three-run home run to Seiya Suzuki. Jeff Hoffman doused the flames of a Cubbies' comeback by retiring the next three hitters, and the Phillies improved to 23-15 on the road.
Phillies vs. Cubs probable pitchers, July 3
- Zack Wheeler (9-4) gets the ball for the Phillies. The righty comes into his 18th start with a 2.73 ERA and 0.98 WHIP after what could be considered a subpar June, at least for him. He went 3-1 but had a 3.66 ERA in five starts, marred mainly by the eight-run Father's Day shellacking at the hands of the Orioles.
- Shota Imanaga (7-2) will take the mound for the Cubs. The 30-year-old rookie southpaw has a 3.07 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 15 starts. After looking unhittable over the season's first two months, June wasn't kind to Imanaga. He finished the month with a 5.67 ERA and 1.33 WHIP while seeing his hard-hit rate jump from 21.1 percent over his first nine starts to 33.6 percent in his last six outings.
