The first regular season edition of MLB.com's Power Rankings is out now, and the Philadelphia Phillies earned a high spot in this week’s list.
After one full week of action, the 7-2 Phillies stayed put at No. 2 on the list, just behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, despite taking two out of three games in their weekend series against the reigning World Series champions.
Dodgers still ranked No. 1 in MLB Power Rankings even after losing to the Phillies
To the Dodgers' credit, they stormed out of the gate with an impressive 8-0 record, including two wins in the Tokyo Series against the Chicago Cubs in mid-March. After dropping two of three to the Phillies, the Dodgers now hold the second-best record in Major League Baseball behind their division rival San Francisco Giants, who made the jump from No. 21 to No. 8 in this week’s rankings.

The Phillies have been led by an impressive display of starting pitching from Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo and even Taijuan Walker, who impressed in his first outing this year in place of Ranger Suárez. Through nine games, Phillies starters have posted a 4-2 record to go along with a 2.87 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. It's important to note that these stats include Aaron Nola, who has gotten off to a tough start to the 2025 campaign.
Furthermore, heading into action on Monday, the rotation ranks in the top five in several categories, including strikeouts (1st), WHIP (1st), quality starts (1st), batting average against (2nd), and walks allowed (2nd).
While we have not seen the power surge that we are used to from the Phillies, they have been pretty productive from the plate so far, for the most part. The offense ranks among the best in the league in batting average (6th), on-base percentage (2nd), and walks (5th).
The team been getting big contributions from regulars such as Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. However, they've also gotten steady production from the likes of Edmundo Sosa, Johan Rojas and Rafael Marchán, who have all played a big role in the team’s hot start this season.
Looking elsewhere in the rankings, the New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers round out the top five, in that order.
In the NL East, the New York Mets are up next at No. 9 with a 6-3 record through nine games. The Atlanta Braves come in a distant 19th after a rough start to the season — a start that the Phillies can make even worse this week as they open a three-game series at Truist Park on Tuesday. The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals round out the division at numbers No. 26 and No. 28 respectively.
MLB.com isn't the only power rankings list in which the Phillies failed to unseat the Dodgers. They are also ranked second by ESPN, USA Today and NBC Sports. CBS Sports is the only outlet to rank the Phillies No. 1, while Bleacher Report is obviously confused, ranking them third.
