The Philadelphia Phillies revealed the latest injury update to shortstop Trea Turner ahead of their contest on Sept. 8 versus the New York Mets. Turner left in the seventh inning of Philadelphia's game against the Miami Marlins with a hamstring injury on Sunday, Sept. 7.
There is concern considering the timing of the injury. There are only a few weeks left in the regular season. The Phillies can ill afford to be without one of their best players in Turner. The shortstop is having his best season with the club offensively, as he leads the National League in hits at the time of his injury.
Will the Phillies get him back in time for October, with enough time to shake the rust off first? According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, they believe they will.
The Phillies placed Trea Turner on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain
Heyman broke the news about Turner's injury status ahead of the team's official announcement, posting that Philly is hopeful that the shortstop might return before the start of the playoffs.
Already without starting pitcher Zack Wheeler for the rest of the year, the franchise would be tested even more if Turner is not ready to return for the start of the postseason.

Turner suffered a similar injury to his left hamstring during the 2024 season. MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan noted that the Phillies' shortstop missed six weeks last year with the strain. If his current strain is not as severe, he may not miss as much time, and could be back by the end of September or by the team's first playoff game. That's how the Phillies' rosier projections reportedly see things.
The Phillies will feel Turner's absence, as he established himself as their leadoff hitter this year. The infielder has 179 hits this year, trailing Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, who has 181, for the MLB lead, as of Sept. 8.
Edmundo Sosa and Bryson Stott are expected to fill in at shortstop in Turner's absence. While the Phillies still have a quality roster capable of success, not having Turner in their lineup with the start of the playoffs a few weeks away will be challenging to deal with.
