In the top of the seventh inning at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner took himself out of the game with an injury. The Phillies quickly confirmed via Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer that Turner exited the contest with a right hamstring strain.

Turner, who has rarely missed a start this season, had a rest day during Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins. That came after he was seen running somewhat gingerly during Friday's game. Per Ty Daubert of Phillies Nation, Rob Thomson insisted that it was a planned day off, saying that he wanted to, “just get him off the turf for a day.”

Trea Turner's hamstring injury comes after 'planned day off' on Saturday

This statement will now be called into question after Turner returned to the dugout on Sunday immediately after legging it out to reach first safely on a throwing error by Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez.

Turner has been an ascendant star for the team and had just hit his 15th home run of the season the inning prior.

This news will undoubtedly strike fear in the hearts of Phillies fans because during the 2024 season Turner missed roughly six weeks due to a left hamstring strain. That injury occurred running the bases on May 3, during a Phillies 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants.

When he returned from the injured list many observed and his stats reflected that he wasn’t playing the same. The famously speedy Turner stole 12 bases over the remainder of the season.

The organization stated he will be evaluated further and Phillies fans have to hope that this is a temporary setback since Turner has been critical to the team's success this season and their strong performance over the past month (subscription required), per Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

After two seasons of weak defensive play Turner has put in the work to change his approach and is now one of the strongest defensive shortstops in the league. Pair that with his near historic offensive performance this season and Phillies fans have been debating whether he’s a better Golden Glove contender, MVP candidate, or both.

Seemingly the only thing that could derail those debates and seriously set back a Phillies postseason run would be a major injury. For now Phillies fans will be holding their breath to hear more from Turner and Phillies management about his future and the fate of the team as we head towards an October that fans have been hoping will be one to remember.
