Phillies’ long-haired lefty obliterates ex-MLBer Jeff Frye over Yankees’ hair policy

The Yankees’ long-standing hair policy has been criticized over the last 50 years, and Phillies All-Star reliever Matt Strahm was recently involved in the controversy after a retired MLB player attacked his appearance on social media.

One of the most unusual policies in sports is the New York Yankees’ hair policy. Former long-time Yankees owner George Steinbrenner purchased the team in 1973 and codified the policy shortly after.

Steinbrenner had a military background and noticed that some of his players sported an “unprofessional” look as they were lined up for the National Anthem on Opening Day, 1973. The famously controversial owner implemented the appearance policy, which states: "All players, coaches and male executives are forbidden to display any facial hair other than mustaches (except for religious reasons), and scalp hair may not be grown below the collar. Long sideburns and mutton chops are not specifically banned.”

Although players have broken the policy over the years or tested its limits, Steinbrenner’s standards are still expected to be met in the Yankees organization to this day.

Matt Strahm obliterates ex-MLBer Jeff Frye over Yankees’ hair policy

FanSided’s Robert Murray recently shared his opinion on X regarding the Yankees’ long-standing hair policy, saying that it’s the worst rule in sports. Former Major League Baseball player Jeffrey Frye responded to Murray’s take with a picture of Philadelphia Phillies All-Star reliever Matt Strahm.

Strahm is known for his long hair, similar to his teammate Brandon Marsh’s long hair and beard. Frye’s shot at Strahm’s “unprofessional” appearance didn’t age well for the 58-year-old.

Strahm clapped back at Frye and didn’t hold back at the retired ballplayer.

“Jeffrey Jeffrey Jeffrey….. why is it always the middle age men with hairlines running away from them coming after us guys with long hair?” Strahm replied on X. “I get it, your time with hair is limited but jealousy isn’t a good look on ya sir.”

The Yankees may want their players to look clean and professional, but that same standard doesn’t apply to every other organization and player. Who’s to say what’s deemed clean and professional? These men are out there to play ball and win games. If they want to grow a beard or have long hair, then so be it.

The world is evolving. Expectations like men with short hair and a clean-shaven face are no longer as demanding as they once were. Strahm and many other players are clear examples of that.

The Yankees’ hair policy has been challenged and has stirred up a lot of controversy over the years. Many believe the organization should move on from its former ways, especially after Steinbrenner died in 2010. It’s a quirky policy that may or may not go away.
