The Philadelphia Phillies have some holes to fill. Fans are clamoring for the club to add a power-hitting outfielder, high-leverage reliever, and quality starting pitcher at this year’s trade deadline. Unfortunately, you’ve got to give something to get something, and the Phillies don’t have very much to give.
Insider Jim Salisbury poured cold water on fans’ hopes of a roster shakeup, claiming,“one thing that will complicate this trade deadline is they don't have a lot to give up. It is not a strong farm system... Everyone talks about [Tarik] Skubal; they don't have enough to get a guy like Skubal.”
While fans may dream of bringing in an ace like Skubal, the Phillies wouldn’t be able to do much more than bid up other clubs who actually have the prospect capital to give up a massive package.
The Phillies have some big needs at the deadline, but according to @JimSalisbury215, the Phillies farm system will make it hard to make a big move.

The Phillies just don’t have many top-tier youngsters, and the few pieces that they do have like Aidan Miller (ongoing back injury) and Justin Crawford/Andrew Painter (current major league contributors) are unlikely to be moved. That leaves the next layer of good-not-great prospects like Aroon Escobar Dante Nori and Gage Wood as potential headliners of a deal.
How can Phillies farm system help them at the trade deadline?
The fact of the matter is that with such little ammunition at his disposal president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski will need to triage his needs and go after the one most important. Another ace in this rotation would be wonderful, but the team can make do with a short-term band-aid that doesn’t cost much. The same can be said for the bullpen, as the group of Jhoan Duran, Brad Keller, Orion Kerkering and José Alvarado should be good enough as is.
Dombrowski only has enough firepower for one major acquisition and it has to be on offense. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Brandon Marsh have been carrying a lineup that has been lifeless otherwise, and they need reinforcements. The Phillies could stand to upgrade at second base, third base, centerfield and right field, giving them ample room to fit in a quality bat (ideally right-handed).
Whether it’s Taylor Ward, Isaac Paredes or even Mike Trout, the Phillies need to add a potent bat if they want to get anywhere in October. Whichever of their prospects other teams show interest in need to be on the table because the time is now to finally win a World Series, and they’re running out of chances.
