Phillies' Field of Dreams Game actually might've saved Alec Bohm's career

Hyperbole? Or on the nose with precision?

It's been no secret that Alec Bohm has elevated himself to public enemy No. 1 among Philadelphia Phillies fans this year. He's struggled to hit, field, and run at an average rate in his seventh MLB season, pushing the Phanatics to insanity, wondering why he is still in the starting lineup.

It's undeniable that Bohm deserved to sit the bench. But his recent series against the Minnesota Twins suggested that the former first-rounder still has some juice left in the tank. On Aug. 13 in Dyersville, Iowa in the Field of Dreams game, the Phillies not only saw Aaron Nola come back to his old self, but also a sliver of Bohm, too.

On a 1-2 slider in the seventh inning, Bohm laced a double 106.2 MPH off his bat to erase what was a prior 0-for-3 night. It marked his first extra-base hit in seven games, and his second overall in his last 14 contests. This double sparked Bohm's best series all season, which has Phillies fans wondering if this recent tirade not only saved his season, but his career.

Does Alec Bohm deserve one more chance from Phillies fans?

Entering Aug. 17, Bohm's OPS for the season is .684. His OPS has yet to eclipse .700 since March 29, but there is a clear gradual climb back to hitting that number.

Following his double at the Field of Dreams, Bohm racked up five hits in his next game, marking the first five-hit game of his career. In three total games against the Twins, he extended his hitting streak to five games after going 8-for-14 with five runs, five extra-base hits, and five RBI (7-for-9 after returning from Iowa). He even crushed his first home run in 22 games on Aug. 16 to cement the series sweep.

This series against the Twins was clearly the re-spark Bohm needed. Was it just a flash in the pan? Or, are we finally seeing his dreadful 2026 season fade back into irrelevance? Even if it's too early to tell which direction Bohm will go in, fans can agree that he absolutely needed this kind of performance. Had he put up three more 0-for games this past series, fans would have been calling for him to be benched, or even DFA'd.
