The Philadelphia Phillies kicked off Opening Day at home with a 5-3 win against the Texas Rangers on Thursday. The Phillies fended off the Rangers despite a late offensive push in the ninth inning. One of the many storylines that made Opening Day more special this year than in previous years was the debut of center fielder Justin Crawford. All curious eyes were on the rookie to see if his skill set could translate to the major league level, and he answered that lingering question in spades with a phenomenal debut for the Phillies.
Crawford played center field and hit ninth for the Phillies. He went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored. Crawford even recorded his first hit on the very first pitch he saw from Rangers ace Nathan Eovaldi. He took a 94.4 mph fastball and laced it back up the middle. Crawford didn't have the chance to show off the speed just yet, but there will be plenty of time for him to do that all season. He didn't look fazed in his first taste of the majors. It's everything Phillies fans could have asked for when visualizing Crawford playing for the Phillies in 2026.
Justin Crawford is comfortable with the Phillies from Day 1
Crawford was drafted 17th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft. His elite batted ball profile made him an easy selection in the early rounds, and he took off in the minor leagues as a result.
In 2025, he ended up leading the International League with a .334 batting average. Crawford was looking poised to take a roster spot for the Phillies in 2026 and got his first shot at just 22 years old.

To help with the impending big step into the majors, Crawford focused on his footwork this winter to become a better defender for his club. There was a lingering question of whether Crawford could be a long-term center fielder, given how he played previously in the minors, but spring training showed a revitalized version of the son of a Rays icon. Crawford did what he could to prove to the Phillies that he's as committed as can be to being an asset in the immediacy.
A two-hit performance in Game 1 of 162 isn't statue-worthy, but it's quite the start and a way to put plenty of Phillies fans minds at ease. He looked like he belonged, something the Phillies have been missing when it comes to younger players on the roster. The Phillies now have a center fielder they can hopefully count on for the long term and look forward to more games with him being that big impact player.
