The Phillies, desperate in their search of late-inning bullpen help, hope that Raley will solve their inconsistencies.

Philadelphia Phillies bullpen gets additional revamp with sturdy Mets left-hander Brooks Raley
The Phillies entered 2026 with expectations that their bullpen would be one of the best in baseball, but injuries and underperformance have derailed what was believed to be one of the club's biggest strengths. Devastating injury news ended Brad Keller's inaugural season in Phillies pinstripes and Jose Alvarado has largely been ineffective. Philadelphia has the seventh highest bullpen ERA in MLB, which rose to the second highest mark in July. Brooks Raley will provide much-needed stability for Don Mattingly.
In return for Raley, the New York Mets will receive prospects RHP Luke Gabrysh and OF John Spikerman. According to MLB Pipeline prospect rankings, Spikerman was the Phillies' 27th ranked prospect and Gabrysh was unranked. Neither prospect has made it beyond High-A since being drafted by the Phillies. Spikerman is a former third-round selection in 2024.

This deal materialized just moments after Philadelphia traded for Luis Arraez and Caleb Killian from the San Francisco Giants. Despite struggling to hit their stride out of the All-Star break, these win-now moves signal that Philadelphia isn't content with their roster. The Dodgers acquisition of two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal could have deterred Philadelphia from making an impactful move. To the Phillies credit, they're gunning for a World Series in 2026.
Now, what comes next? The Phillies could still use additional thump, though moving Bryce Harper back to the outfield could kill two birds with one stone (after we'd heard Lars Nootbaar-Dustin May rumors on Sunday evening). Either way, the Phillies have a championship makeover on their mind and struck twice in succession on deadline day. That certainly signifies they probably aren't done.
