The Philadelphia Phillies haven't had a seamless start to the regular season. Players on the roster are still finding their footing, but the hope is, it'll come sooner rather than later. The NL East won't wait up for anyone, so it's the Phillies' job to put a winning club on the field and consistently win to fend off their division rivals.
Of the many hiccups that have plagued the Phillies' early-season, third baseman Alec Bohm has been the hardest to digest (subscription required), per Matt Gelb of The Athletic. An All-Star campaign in 2024 set the stage for what could be a tremendous climb to stardom.
That didn't happen right away, with Bohm hitting .150/.164/.167 with a .331 OPS through his first 14 games to open 2025. It was a start that raised some early troubling questions for the 28-year-old. Bohm figured the game was trying to teach him a lesson, per NBC Sports Philadelphia's Corey Seidman.
The good news is, as bad as his start was, Bohm seems to have found some light out of the recent darkness he found himself in.
Alec Bohm has officially broken out of his slump with a seven-game hit streak
Slumps can't be broken in one day, which can make it feel like an eternity before the player can get back on the right track. Bohm has also fallen victim to some bad luck with some hard-hit outs. But now, after a 1-for-5 game with a double in Sunday's finale against the Miami Marlins, he has put together a nice seven-game hitting streak dating back to April 14. Bohm has recorded just one hit in six of the seven games, but had a two-hit game mixed in.
It might not seem like a lot right now, but every little bit helps when it seems nothing was going right before. During his hit streak, he's hitting .286/.310/.464, good for a .774 OPS, with three doubles, a triple and 3 RBIs, which are much more digestible numbers for both Bohm and the Phillies. He's not setting the world on fire, and Bohm knows that there is much more that needs to be done.
Bohm has raised his batting average 37 points in just seven games to .193 heading into the three-game series against the New York Mets on Monday. It's only a matter of time until that shoots up even higher once he starts clicking.
Bohm finished 2024 with a .780 OPS, which is not far off the pace he has been hitting the last week. He just needs to crawl out of the hole he has dug himself and with the veteran leadership around him, there's a path for Bohm to clear this hurdle. If he can do that, there's a real chance he can take his game to a new level and grow as one of the best third basemen in the National League.
