The Philadelphia Phillies (1-0) opened the 2025 regular season with a very Phillies-esque 7-3 Opening Day win on Thursday against the Washington Nationals (0-1). After an off day on Friday, the two NL East rivals will renew acquaintances on Saturday in the second game of the three-game Opening Weekend series.

Shadows played a huge part in Phillies batters setting an Opening Day franchise record with 19 strikeouts. Starters Zack Wheeler and MacKenzie Gore put on a pitching clinic, with the former registering eight strikeouts over six innings of one-run ball, while the latter set a career-high with 13 strikeouts over six shutout frames. Alec Bohm came through with a tie-breaking two-run double in the 10th inning to help bail out newcomer Jordan Romano after his blown hold in the eighth.

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber both hit solo home runs, and J.T. Realmuto chipped in with a two-run triple to blow the game wide open in the 10th. The Phillies also received solid relief outings from Orion Kerkering, José Alvarado and Matt Strahm in the opening game of the season.

Phillies vs. Nationals probable pitchers, March 29

  • Jesús Luzardo (0-0) will take the ball for the Phillies in Game 2 of the season. The newest addition to the starting rotation had what can only be described as an uneven spring training, posting a 9.49 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. He's coming off an injury-riddled 2024 in which he pitched to a 5.00 ERA in just 66 2/3 innings for the Marlins. He made one start against the Nationals last season, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings.
  • Jake Irvin (0-0) will start for the Nationals. The 28-year-old right-hander had a 3.86 ERA with nine strikeouts and eight walks in 16 1/3 spring training innings. Despite a solid 2024 campaign, he went 0-3 in four starts against the Phillies last year, with a 7.59 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. Irvin allowed 18 earned runs, including four home runs, in 21 1/3 innings in those outings.
