The Philadelphia Phillies (8-5) and St. Louis Cardinals (6-7) resume their series on Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium. The Phillies dropped the opener 2-0 on Friday, in a snooze fest of a performance that saw the offense held to three hits and two walks despite only striking out four times.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson even unveiled a new lineup for the game, with second baseman Bryson Stott leading off. It was also the first time ever that Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber had hit back-to-back in the 3-4 spots, per MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.
The new arrangement didn't seem to matter, with none of the Phillies hitters able to solve Cardinals starter Andre Pallante, who skated through seven shutout innings. Phillies starter Aaron Nola did his best to keep his team in the game, going five innings without allowing a home run for the first time this season. He uncharacteristically struggled with command, however, walking four while striking out seven but being charge with both St. Louis runs.
If you're wondering how the struggling Alec Bohm did, he went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, dropping his early-season batting average to .151 and his OPS to .337.
The Phillies will look to get back in the win column today with a similar-looking lineup construction.
Phillies vs. Cardinals probable pitchers, April 12
- Cristopher Sánchez (0-0, 4.09 ERA) will take the ball for the Phillies. The lefty went 5 2/3 innings in his last outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He dominated Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, but still allowed four runs on six hits while striking out nine. Sánchez didn't face the Cardinals in 2024, but St. Louis has fared well against southpaws so far this year. They've hit to a .263 average, an .812 OPS and the fourth-best wRC+ (134).
- Miles Mikolas (0-1, 11.25 ERA) will throw for the Cardinals today. The 36-year-old right-hander got lit up against the Boston Red Sox in his last outing, giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits over 2 2/3 innings. He made two starts against the Phillies last season, going 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 12 2/3 innings of work.
