The Philadelphia Phillies (7-3) and Atlanta Braves (2-8) are set to resume their series at Truist Park on Wednesday. After bungling Tuesday's effort in a disheartening 7-5 loss, the Phillies will look to keep the previously impotent-looking Braves down on the mat.
The Phillies had a chance to take control of the series early in the series opener. The first inning began with an Edmundo Sosa victory lap after he pulled a home run back on his first play in his first start in the outfield in his professional career. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there.
Sosa and center fielder Johan Rojas had a costly miscommunication that saw a ball — which Rojas should have easily caught — drop in for a double. The play led to Braves catcher Sean Murphy crushing a three-run home run off Zack Wheeler.
The loss dropped the Phillies half a game behind the New York Mets, who have won six straight, in the NL East. The Braves still sit last in the division, 5.5 games back of the Mets.
Phillies vs. Braves probable pitchers, April 9
- Taijuan Walker (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season for the Phillies. Filling in for the injured Ranger Suárez, the right-hander blanked the Colorado Rockies over six innings in his season debut. Walker took the first step in convincing Phillies fans to believe that he can be useful this season — although he'll have to continue pitching effectively to keep the fans on his side.
- Grant Holmes (0-1, 7.20 ERA) will start for the Braves. After making one relief appearance on Opening Day, the 29-year-old right-hander started and lost against the Dodgers last time out. He went four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Holmes made three relief appearances against the Phillies in 2024, holding them to one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
