The Philadelphia Phillies (37-23) will look to build on Tuesday's win as they tangle with the Toronto Blue Jays (31-29) at Rogers Centre in the second game of their midweek set. The Phillies got back in the win column in a big way in the series opener. They snapped their four-game losing streak with a decisive 8-3 victory, riding a six-run first inning to the win.
Bryce Harper returned after missing five games, and showed everyone, including Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis, that his elbow is fine. Harper homered in his first at-bat, going back-to-back with Trea Turner, who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez threw a quality start, logging six innings and allowing only one run to cross the plate. He struck out four and walked four in the winning effort. Joe Ross, Max Lazar and Carlos Hernández closed out the final three frames.
With the score so lopsided, both Jordan Romano and Jeff Hoffman were stuck in the bullpens, with neither closer getting the chance to face their old club.
Phillies vs. Blue Jays probable pitchers, June 4
- Mick Abel (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was added to the roster and will make his second MLB start for the Phillies. The 23-year-old dazzled in his debut on May 18, striking out nine Pittsburgh Pirates over six scoreless innings. The plan is for the Phillies' No. 8 prospect to rejoin the rotation while Aaron Nola is on the 15-day IL.
- José Berríos (2-2, 3.86 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays. The 31-year-old right-hander has three quality starts in a row and is coming off a six-inning shutout over the Athletics. He gave up two hits and two walks in that one, while striking out nine. Berríos faced the Phillies once last season, and got lit up for seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.
