The Philadelphia Phillies (47-32) will look to get back in the win column against the Houston Astros (46-33) on Wednesday in the second game of their series at Daikin Park.
The Phillies came into Houston on Tuesday riding high, having won 10 of 13. They were stymied by a familiar foe in Astros starter Framber Valdez in a 1-0 loss. The lefty wasn't his sharpest but kept the Phillies off the board. They went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base as Valdez out dueled Ranger Suárez.
The Phillies' lefty, who has been on a dominant run, was close to perfect again. He didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and tossed 7 2/3 frames with seven strikeouts. Suárez's only mistake was leaving a cutter out over the plate, per MLB.com's Paul Casella, that Astros outfielder Cooper Hummel didn't miss for a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like Bryce Harper will rejoin the lineup this week, but he's making progress. The good news for the Phillies is that the New York Mets lost (again!) to the Atlanta Braves, so they still hold a 2.5 game lead in the NL East heading into Wednesday's game.
Phillies vs. Astros probable pitchers, June 25
- Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.61 ERA) will take the ball for the Phillies. He brings a stellar 0.91 WHIP and 118 strikeouts in 93 innings into this one. After going six innings in his first two starts of June, he only sent five last time out against the Mets. However, Wheeler shut them out on four hits and three walks while striking out eight.
- Colton Gordon (2-1, 4.54 ERA) will make his eighth MLB start for the Astros. The 26-year-old left-hander sports a 1.37 WHIP with 34 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings. The rookie held the Athletics three runs (two earned) over five innings in his last outing. Both earned runs came on home runs — he as already allowed eight long balls this season.
