The Philadelphia Phillies (47-31) hit the road to face the Houston Astros (45-33) and open a three-game series at Daikin Park on Tuesday night.
The Phillies come into Houston riding high. Their big weekend series win over the NL East rival New York Mets included a pair of blowout wins, per NBC Sports Philadelphia's Corey Seidman and possibly the funniest baserunning play of the year. Now leading the division by 1.5 games, the Phils have won four straight series and 10 of their last 13 games. They've outscored their opponents during this stretch 72-46, averaging 5.5 runs/game.
The Astros are 7-3 in their last 10, and are coming off a series win over the Los Angeles Angels on the weekend. They lead the AL West by 4.5 games. In their lone head-to-head series last season, the Phillies won two of three at Citizens Bank Park.
Phillies vs. Astros probable pitchers, June 24
- Ranger Suárez (6-1, 2.20 ERA) will open the series for the Phillies. The lefty has been downright incredible since his season debut, posting a 1.17 ERA over eight straight quality starts. He'll have his work cut out for him tonight, however, as the Astros have the second-highest OPS (.810) against left-handers this season.
- Framber Valdez (8-4, 3.09 ERA) will counter for the Astros. The 31-year-old left-hander is having a strong season, with a 1.13 WHIP and 11 quality starts in 15 outings, including a couple of complete games. After a pair of double-digit strikeout games to begin June, Valdez struck out just three and walked five Athletics last time out. He held them to two runs over six innings, however, to pick up his sixth straight win.
