Massive Phillies trade rumor would spell end of Alec Bohm's time at third base

The Phillies seem willing to trade for Eugenio Suárez, even if it potentially costs Alec Bohm's spot at third base.

The Philadelphia Phillies would like to inject a massive offensive piece into the lineup. One rumored player would be Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. Although it would be a massive upgrade to the offense, the potential deal could have negative implications on other parts of the roster.

Suárez's name has been thrown around in the league's trade discussions as possibly the most sought-after name ahead of Thursday's trade deadline (subscription required), per Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer. He'll be a popular name with the D-backs currently in sell mode. A deal would be monumental for the Phillies, but it would cause ripple effects that would directly impact current Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm.

Trade for Eugenio Suárez could end Alec Bohm's time at third base, maybe even end his time with Phillies

If they trade for Suárez, there would have to be some movement in the field. An idea from former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. would be to move Kyle Schwarber to left field to fill the offensive void there, which isn't too drastic, considering he has had a decent amount of playing time. The other move would be putting Suárez at third base until Bohm returns from his cracked rib and then splitting time in the designated hitter spot between Suárez, Bohm and Bryce Harper. Regardless of the defensive movement required, the Phillies still seem willing to make it work.

Although it's doable, it sounds like an overcrowded mess to handle for the remaining two months of the season. Bohm however, could be the odd man out given how Suárez has performed with a slash line of .248/.321/.577, good for an .898 OPS. He's also tied for second in the National League with Schwarber with 36 home runs.

Bohm's production hasn't been bad and actually has been solid as of late. He's currently rocking a .278 batting average with eight homers and 42 RBIs. However, since the beginning of May, he's batting .304 with all eight of his home runs and has an .802 OPS during that span. His rib fracture is expected to keep him out for at least the remainder of July, per MLB.com's Paul Casella.

There's also a chance that he winds up being part of the package headed back to Arizona. The D-backs are reportedly looking for a MLB player as well as a high-minors prospect and low-minors prospect in a potential deal.

The question right now is if the Phillies would be willing to send a sizable package to bring Suárez to Philadelphia. Even with him becoming a free agent after the 2025 season, Suárez provides massive pop to a lineup that coming into Tuesday' action, ranked 12th in the league in home runs. The downside would be Bohm possibly getting moved himself or having to fit in another way. It isn't the best-case scenario for the team, but like a lot of Phillies fans that want Suárez, it'll come with some kind of cost.
