The Philadelphia Phillies were looking for some life after getting swept by the New York Mets, in which they were outscored 25-8. They got that injection of life in their series opener against their other division rival, the Atlanta Braves, after All-Star slugger Kyle Schwarber had a career night by hammering four home runs on Thursday, per MLB.com's Paul Casella, and now has 49 home runs on the year.

Schwarber made history against the Braves by becoming the third player in 2025 and 21st player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a single game. Schwarber single-handedly fueled the Phillies' offensive explosion with a 4-for-6 performance, with four runs scored, four home runs and nine RBIs. The Phillies won 19-4 to go to 77-57. His nine runs batted in also set a new franchise record.

Kyle Schwarber propels himself into class with Phillies legends with four-home run performance

Few players can say they had the success that Schwarber had in a given night, with four home runs. But among the few, the Phillies are represented by four of their own, with Schwarber now being the most recent member of the four-home run club.

He joins Ed Delahanty (July 13, 1896), Chuck Klein (July 10, 1946) and Mike Schmidt (April 17, 1976) as the only Phillies to hit such a mark. This also is the first time a Phillies player has achieved the impressive feat in nearly a half-century. It's also worth noting that the three Phillies players to have done it previously are in the Hall of Fame.

Schwarber might have a little more work than the other three to get into the Hall of Fame, but he's been on a tremendous pace as a member of the Phillies since he joined in 2022. Since he signed as a free agent, he has hit 180 home runs in just four years, with a month still to go this season. He's been among the top home run hitters every season, with this year being his most impressive yet.

According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Schwarber now owns the second-most home runs by a Phillies player in a season (subscription required). He now sits just behind Ryan Howard for the most in a season with 58, when he won the NL MVP in 2006.

It's a milestone for Schwarber not just from a single-game performance, but it also adds to his 2025 NL MVP case. After the monster offensive night, he now has 94 runs scored, 49 home runs and 119 RBIs through 134 games. His 49 homers lead the NL, while his 119 RBIs leads all MLB, with the next closest being 108.

His previous career high in home runs was 47 in 2023, so perhaps there's more history to be made. If Schwarber can have a strong month of September, he could be knocking on the door of a much more elite class: the 60 home run club. The hunt is on with September around the corner.
