Even Alec Bohm's big return couldn't will Phillies to series win in Arizona

At least something good came from the series loss in the desert.

The Philadelphia Phillies dropped two of three to the scrappy Arizona Diamondbacks on the weekend. It was the Phillies' first series loss since getting swept in Queens in late August, while the D-backs are still clinging to some playoff hope. What did go well, however, was Alec Bohm's scorching-hot return to the lineup.

Bohm had just returned from the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation. The Phillies were ready to have their third baseman back, and he sure was ready to show up in their final road trip of the regular season. The Phillies are pushing to maintain a top seed in the NL, and Bohm had quite the weekend to help his team achieve that goal.

Bohm had eight hits in 13 at-bats over the weekend, with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs. He also capped off Sunday's series finale with a 4-for-4 day, including a double and a walk. He bumped his batting average up nine points to a .282 batting average in just the three games. Bohm certainly did his part, but unfortunately the rest of the team couldn't muster enough to keep the series-winning streak alive.

The Phillies were outscored 15-13 in the series, which won't spark panic in the eyes of Phillies fans, but the offense just came up short, especially with runners in scoring position. They compiled eight runs on 13 hits in Friday's 8-2 win, but just five runs crossed the plate on 18 hits across losses on Saturday and Sunday. Bohm helped fuel the team from the middle of the lineup, but the Phillies couldn't capitalize on having the third baseman go on a tear.

Bohm has overcome a lot by getting to this point. Phillies fans were wondering what version of Bohm they would get in 2025, and it has again been the same consistent bat-to-ball guy that they've had up until this point. It didn't start out that way, however, with a .221 batting average through the end of April, but he's since turned it around with a .303 batting average since May 1.

He deserves recognition for still holding his own in a star-studded Phillies lineup and doing his best to fill the missing hole of Trea Turner.

“I don’t think numbers-wise I’ve had the best year that I could’ve had, but I’ve battled through some things,” Bohm said after Saturday's 4-3 loss, per MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. “It’s not always easy. You’re not always going to have your best year every year. But I’m feeling healthy now and I feel like with what we have left I can kind of flip the script on that and at least leave some good memories with the end instead.

Bohm is an important part of what the Phillies have going and what they hope they carry into October. They've clinched the NL East and look to get a first-round bye yet again this season. The Phillies have a tremendous top three in their lineup of Turner, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, but it will be the players like Bohm who will get them over the edge on a World Series run.
