That’s a wrap folks. The Philadelphia Phillies crashed and burned just as everyone expected them to. The same team that has continued to run it back for half a decade now cannot afford to do so again. They may be stuck with aging, overpaid pieces like Trea Turner and Aaron Nola, but that doesn’t mean everyone will return next season. Let’s dive into the Phillies players who clearly won’t be here in 2027.
José Alvarado
José Alvarado should be ashamed of himself. The husky left-hander has shot his team in the foot two years in a row, first with a performance-enhancing drug suspension and now with an atrocious 5.86 ERA across 68 appearances. The Phillies’ bullpen was one of their most glaring weaknesses all season, and Alvarado was perhaps the biggest culprit in that. Mercifully, the 31-year-old is set to hit free agency this winter. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Brooks Raley
Speaking of bullpen failures, trade acquisition Brooks Raley was somehow more inept than Alvarado. The 38-year-old posted a sparkling 1.96 ERA over 45 outings with the division-rival New York Mets, but went completely off the rails after arriving in Philly. Raley was called upon 15 times in red pinstripes and responded with a ghastly 7.94 ERA. Unsurprisingly, Raley was left off the postseason roster and fans everywhere rejoice that he’s reaching free agency this winter.
The Phillies can't afford to run it back in 2027 with these guys
Alec Bohm
Finally, after seven long years, the Phillies will more than likely have a new face at third base next season. 2018 third-overall pick Alec Bohm had his moments, but on the whole the towering Nebraskan was quite underwhelming with a career .735 OPS. Worse yet, Bohm completely cratered in his platform year, posting a woeful .698 mark with his typical brand of granite glove defense. He may have come up with a huge home run in the Wild Card round, but that won’t be nearly enough to redeem him in the eyes of Phillies fans.
Adolis García
It’s easy to forget that longtime Texas Ranger Adolis García was the Phils’ Opening Day right fielder. The former World Series hero was yet another in a long line of president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski’s failed outfield band-aids, and he failed to launch in Philly with a .599 OPS over 67 games. A shoulder injury sidelined him for the rest of the season in mid-June; $10 million down the drain.
Rafael Marchán
Rafael Marchán is not a good baseball player. The once-promising prospect was a complete waste of a roster spot this season, putting up an anemic .302 OPS in 34 games. Between Marchán and Garrett Stubbs, the Phillies got absolutely nothing from the backup catcher position, and that can’t be allowed to continue moving forward. J.T. Realmuto will be 36 years old when next season starts, and the Phillies would be wise to give him as much rest as they can to coax whatever life remains out of his diminishing bat. Give Marchán’s deficiencies, he shouldn’t be the one getting extra playing time at Realmuto’s expense.
