Another year of hopeful postseason magic by the Philadelphia Phillies ends in another edition of the perpetual reversion Phillies fans feared all along. As it turns out, they're still supremely flawed. After a jolt of excitement in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series, the Phillies fell flat in a winner-take-all Game 3 against the Atlanta Braves. As the steps back in postseason play continue with each season, the questions only mount for a ball club that has refused to shake things up to this point. Their star first baseman and late-campaign outfielder, Bryce Harper, was front and center after Game 3 and gave some pointed comments on the change that could take place this offseason.
Harper was asked by MLB.com's Todd Zolecki if he's worried at all about this core not winning a title with their age becoming a growing factor. Harper certainly seems to realize what will be at stake.
“I'd imagine this team is going to look a lot different next year,” Harper said. “The guys that are leaving this clubhouse. We'll see.”
Bryce Harper says the quiet part out loud for what should take place for Phillies this winter
The Phillies have faded farther and farther from a World Series title since their breakthrough in 2022. The thing that has remained is the way their roster is constructed, primarily the offense. A unit that was supposed to complement the star pitching for the Phillies was instead the ultimate disappointment in 2026. Harper knows that president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is willing to do a lot to make this baseball team compete in October, but it clearly hasn't worked. Perhaps players leaving in free agency is what's best. The front office will then be tasked with getting better players to fill those spots.

Harper mentioning the team looking different could very well mean one or more of the roster's big pieces has played their last game as a Phillie. Whether the Phillies' brass even considers that approach remains to be seen. Either way, the definition of insanity has been playing out in front of these fans year after year.
The post-playoffs chatter even picked up about Harper being on the trade block this year. Early in his Phillies career, he became an icon that gave the Phillies one of the most memorable postseason moments in its existence. There's a portion of the fan base that could never even think about that happening, but nothing can be off the table the way this has gone in the postseason. Change needs to be made throughout the roster, and the Phillies continue to give themselves more time each October to regroup before a long winter.
