The Philadelphia Phillies are only one of multiple playoff-contending teams that will have more of an interest in the availability of some Boston Red Sox players leading up to the MLB trade deadline. The Red Sox completed a shocking trade as they dealt star player designated hitter/third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison in addition to prospects outfielder James Tibbs III and pitcher Jose Bello.
The Red Sox are 5.5 games back of the American League East-leading New York Yankees and hold the third Wild Card spot. However, they are prioritizing their future despite being in the race for a playoff spot.
Philadelphia's president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski held the same role with the Red Sox from August 2015 until September 2019. He should get in touch with the organization he used to be a part of and check on the availability of some Red Sox relievers and outfielders, improving the Phillies at the positions that need to be upgraded.
Phillies should target these three Red Sox players following the Rafael Devers blockbuster
Aroldis Chapman, LHP
Aroldis Chapman would solve the Phillies' need for another left-handed reliever they could use in high-leverage situations following the suspension of José Alvarado. Alvarado still has two months remaining on his suspension and will be unavailable to pitch in the playoffs.
It is understandable if Phillies fans would have a mixed reaction if the organization were to trade for Chapman. His reputation has been tarnished following a suspension by MLB in 2016 for a domestic violence incident that occurred in October 2015.
However, Chapman has been one of the league's better late-inning relievers this year for the Red Sox. He has saved 13 games out of 14 opportunities, and his 1.50 ERA is one of the best among bullpen pitchers. The lefty looks rejuvenated following the last few years when he did not look as sharp during 2022 with the New York Yankees, part of 2023 with the Texas Rangers, and the previous season as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The veteran pitcher has a history of pitching in the postseason, including being a member of the 2016 World Series-winning Chicago Cubs and with the Rangers two years ago. Both clubs acquired Chapman at the respective trade deadlines. He also has previous playoff experience with the Cincinnati Reds and Yankees.
Chapman signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox last offseason and will likely be traded by the deadline. The lefty can still throw wicked pitches that reach over 100 mph. He would make the Phillies' bullpen more formidable.
Jarren Duran, OF
Jarren Duran is not a pending free agent until 2029, but his name has surfaced in trade rumors for the Red Sox. The 28-year-old broke out for Boston in 2023 as he compiled a .828 OPS and slashed .295/.346/.482 in 102 games.
The outfielder is known for his speed on the base paths, as he led Boston with 24 steals in 2023. In 2024, Duran finished with an .834 OPS and a .285/.342/.492 line, with 21 home runs, 75 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He demonstrated durability, playing in 160 of 162 games and again finished first in stolen bases with 34.
So far, Duran has played in 73 of Boston's 74 games in 2025. The Corona, California, native leads the team with 14 stolen bases and has a line of .264/.319/.421 with a .774 OPS.

The Red Sox have a position player jam on their hands, as prospects being promoted to the majors. Top MLB prospect Roman Anthony is one example, as he is currently with Boston, but they also have outfielder Wilyer Abreu returning from the IL. If the club wants Anthony to play full-time later in the summer, they will need to trade some players, and Duran is a candidate to be elsewhere by the conclusion of the July 31 deadline, per ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Duran has played in center field (264 games) the most in his MLB career. He has also played 182 contests in left field and nine in right. He has a club option of $8 million in 2026, followed by two years of arbitration before becoming a free agent in 2029. Duran would represent a boost to the Phillies' outfield, particularly in left. Outfielder Max Kepler does not look the part of a full-time outfielder, as neither do Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas.
Rob Refsnyder, OF
Outfielder Rob Refsnyder, another Red Sox pending free agent, is a candidate to be traded. The Phillies should consider acquiring him, as he has experience playing all three outfield positions. He has played the most games in left field (172) in his career, followed by right (133) and center (54).
The Korean native would give the Phillies another right-handed hitter, which is what Dombrowski has targeted before for the club at last year's deadline. Refsnyder presents a solid option that manager Rob Thomson could have confidence platooning in left with Kepler, or in center or right field if needed.
The Boston outfielder represents an upgrade offensively for the Phillies outfield, aside from Nick Castellanos. Refsnyder has a .933 OPS, which is second among Red Sox hitters, and a line of .307/.400/.533 in 31 games.

He has not been a full-time player during his 10 years in the majors and his one season in the minors. Thomson prefers platooning players in left field and center. Refsnyder would represent an ideal addition for Philadelphia in that regard. He would also not cost the Phillies as much in a trade as Duran.
