2. The Phillies lack depth in the farm system
The Phillies moved up in the farm system rankings for the first time in more than half a decade, but they’ve got a long way to go.
Aside from Bryson Stott, who could debut as early as whenever Opening Day happens (thanks, lockout), the Phillies still lack depth in their farm system. Of their top ten prospects, five have debut estimates of 2023 or later.
Without a strong farm system, the Phillies are unable to substitute for injured big-leaguers, or simply fill roster spots as they come. Instead, they will need to continue trading for or purchasing from the free-agent pool, which only further increases their payroll.
