Phillies: Freddy Galvis reacts to trade home
Freddy Galvis made his major-league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012 and spent the first six seasons of his career with the team.
Now, he’s right back where he started, and Galvis is apparently feeling the homecoming nostalgia just like fans.
He kept it simple, posting a throwback photo to his Instagram early Friday evening:
The emoji caption is short, but sweet. Galvis clearly considers Philly to be home.
Galvis also reposted the Phillies Instagram story that welcomed him home, and replied “Thanks ❤️❤️” to their post:
The Phillies have also recently followed Galvis, as well as first-round pick Andrew Painter.
Freddy Galvis has been with the Phillies since they discovered him when he was 16 years old.
Phillies scouts Sal Agostinelli and Jesus Mendez discovered Galvis as a teenager and signed him back in 2006. He grew up in the Phillies minor league system before making his big-league debut on Opening Day 2012.
With Jimmy Rollins blocking his way to the big leagues, it was only when Chase Utley injured his knee that Galvis got the call. He was the first Phillies player to make his debut on Opening Day in 42 years. Despite injuries and a PED suspension, Galvis became a fan favorite.
After Rollins was traded to the Dodgers, Galvis became the Phillies shortstop for the 2015 season. He was nominated for a Gold Glove the following year. The following year, he played every single game of the season, and was again a Gold Glove nominee.
Since his trade to the Padres in December 2017, Galvis has floated around to different teams: the Blue Jays, Reds, and Orioles, who traded him home to the Phillies on Friday. In exchange, the Phillies sent minor-league pitcher Tyler Burch to Baltimore.
This season, Galvis is slashing .249/.306/.414 with a .720 OPS, nine home runs, and 26 RBI in 72 games. He’s currently recovering from a quad injury, but is expected to make his Phillies debut in August.
Welcome home, Freddy!
