Phillies news: Hyun-Soo Kim shines, Altherr struggles in KBO opener

INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA - MAY 05: (EDITORIAL USE ONLY) General view of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) League opening game between SK Wyverns and Hanwha Eagles at the empty SK Happy Dream Ballpark on May 05, 2020 in Incheon, South Korea. The 2020 KBO season started after being delayed from the original March 28 Opening Day due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The KBO said its 10 clubs will be able to expand their rosters from 28 to 33 players in 54 games this season, up from the usual 26. Teams are scheduled to play 144 games this year. As they prepared for the new beginning, 10 teams managers said the season would not be happening without the hard work and dedication of frontline medical and health workers. South Korea is transiting this week to a quarantine scheme that allows citizens to return to their daily routines under eased guidelines. But health authorities are still wary of "blind spots" in the fight against the virus cluster infections and imported cases. According to the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 3 new cases were reported. The total number of infections in the nation tallies at 10,804. (Photo by Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images)

The latest Phillies news comes from across the Pacific in the KBO

Our latest Phillies news comes courtesy of the Korean Baseball Organization where five former Phillies suited up for the season opener Monday evening.

Certain games are being aired on ESPN throughout the day both live and as replays. and Phillies fans had the chance to see some alumni appear for their new teams.

Hitting second and playing center field for the NC Dinos, Aaron Altherr went 0-4 with a strikeout in a 4-0 win over the Samsung Lions. His former teammates Ben Lively and David Buchannan did not appear for the Lions.

More from Phillies News

Hyun-Soo Kim hit a two-run home run off Raul Alcantara in the third inning and went 2-4 with three RBI and a run scored for the LG Twins. The Twins won 8-2 thanks to a five-run eighth inning

Ricardo Pinto did not make an appearance for the KT Wiz in their 7-2 loss to the Lotte Giants.

One player we did not mention when previewing the former Phillies in the KBO is Dan Straily. He technically didn’t play for the Phillies, but was acquired as veteran depth from the Orioles in 2019 and played in Lehigh Valley, pitching in six games with a 5.18 ERA.

Straily made the opening day start for the Lotte Giants, going 5 2/3 innings giving up two runs off three hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

We’ll keep an eye on the rest of the Korean Baseball Organization stats and how those former Phillies are doing, as well as the state of Major League Baseball.
