Highly-regarded baseball executive Dave Dombrowski is looking for a new job after being fired by the Red Sox. Should the Phillies look to hire him?

As is tradition, feelings towards the Phillies front office has swung wildly this year. Optimism was running high after an offseason jam-packed with acquisitions highlighted by the signing of Bryce Harper. However, with playoff odds looking slim, that optimism has vanished.

Numerous things could be blamed for how this season has transpired. Injuries are a significant factor, but they aren’t the only reason things have gone poorly. The finger could also be pointed at manager Gabe Kapler or the front office depending on your predispositions towards the two.

If owner John Middleton feels like the front office is to blame, he now has a golden opportunity to change the staff with a proven winner. The Red Sox fired president Dave Dombrowski over the weekend with their odds of making the playoffs also quickly evaporating.

It’s extremely rare to see an executive fired less than a year after constructing a World Series winner, but Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated offered some insight into the decision. Verducci wrote that Red Sox owner John Henry is seeking a “process-oriented architect” that can build their next contender.

Verducci stated that Dombrowski is the type of executive who makes decisions based on the current situation rather than taking a long-term view, building a contender quickly, “prospects and money be damned.”

A process-oriented front office sounds awful like the one currently in place in Philadelphia.

Even as the hype began to grow for this season, general manager Matt Klentak and president Andy MacPhail preached the long-term goals of the front office. That message continued to be espoused as the season deteriorated.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required) wrote about the complacency of Philadelphia’s front office and how it contributed to the team’s downfall this year. If Middleton has a similar opinion of the front office after this season, he could be inclined to bring in Dombrowski.

R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports furthered this idea, listing Philadelphia as one of five landing spots for Dombrowski.

Before you start drafting Klentak and MacPhail’s pink slips, Anderson noted that it’s far more likely Kapler will be the fall guy from this season and lose his job. Klentak received a contract extension in March, likely meaning he’s around for a while.

Next. Phillies giving no reason to believe in them. dark

Still, it will be worth keeping an eye on how Dombrowski’s market develops over the offseason. Whatever teams decide to clean house in their front office will certainly consider him, and there’s a chance Philadelphia could be one of those teams.
