One of the Phillies top prospects came out strong Monday night in Reading.

The Phillies have struggled to produce pitching prospects in recent years, but lately, they have stocked up on depth in their minor leagues. One arm they picked up early in the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft could be an interesting chip for Philadelphia down the road.

Connor Seabold churned out a quality start Monday night in Reading’s 4-2 win over Bowie, striking out six while allowing one run off three hits in seven innings. The 23-year-old picked up his second win for Reading after missing most of the season with an injury.

Seabold’s start was just his 11 appearance this year and sixth for Reading, but he’s shown up strong in recent weeks. He’s thrown four straight quality starts (six innings allowing three runs or less) and allowed only 11 runs in as many games.

The righty has also been striking out batters at a rapid pace, picking up his 53rd strikeout Monday night. He’s walked only 10 batters this year and is barely allowing a base runner per inning.

The Cal-State Fullerton product ranks 30th on MLB Pipeline’s Phillies prospects and isn’t ranked on Baseball America’s list (subscription required) but he’s a guy who could continue to move through the system quickly.

While Seabold doesn’t have electric stuff sitting in the low 90s, he has solid command and makeup for a back of the rotation starter or long reliever. If Philadelphia needs to swing a trade this offseason for a low-end reliever or bench player, Seabold could be a trade chip worth moving.
