With the dust settled after the trade deadline, Jim Bowden of the Athletic ranked the Phillies’ farm system ninth-best in the league.

Jim Bowden of the Athletic (subscription required) released his post-trade deadline rankings Wednesday. He ranked the Phillies No. 9 overall on his list, giving the system a B+ grade.

Bowden said he evaluated systems both on their top prospects as well as their depth, giving more weight to the top prospects than anything else. This is because those top prospects are the most likely ones to help their organization win a championship, noting the last few World Series champions.

Philadelphia had the second-best farm in the NL East. The Braves ranked second, Nationals ranked 16th, Marlins ranked 24th, and Mets ranked 26th. The Padres were ranked first overall, while the Mariners came in dead last.

More from Phillies Prospects

These are Philadelphia’s top ten prospects according to Bowden:

RHP Sixto SanchezSS Luis Garcia3B Alec BohmRHP Adonis MedinaOF Adam HaseleyOF Jhailyn OrtizOF Mickey MoniakLHP JoJo RomeroRHP Enyel De Los SantosRHP Spencer Howard

Sanchez is the consensus top prospect in the organization with the potential to be an ace according to Bowden. Sanchez has only pitched 46.2 innings this year due to injury, but he looked great during them. Against players four years older than him in High-A Clearwater, Sanchez had a 2.51 ERA, 45 strikeouts, 11 walks, and a 1.071 WHIP. He may get a look in the Arizona Fall League but should be in Double-A to start next season.

Garcia has been the breakout prospect in the Gulf Coast League at just 17 years old. He has a .363/.430/.481 line with just 21 strikeouts and 15 walks in 179 plate appearances. Philadelphia gave him a $2.5 million signing bonus as MLB.com’s No. 7 international prospect last year. Garcia is still insanely young, but anyone who puts up those numbers at that age is bound to get attention.

More from That Balls Outta Here

Bowden has the last three first-round picks (Bohm, Haseley, and Moniak) all within four spots of each other. Bohm returned from the disabled list Tuesday after hurting his knee. His numbers in Williamsport have been poor (.203/.299/.220, no home runs) but he displayed enough hitting ability in college that there is no reason to worry yet. Haseley has hit the ball well all season long with a .302 batting average and .788 OPS in 115 games between Clearwater and Double-A Reading. Moniak has finally turned a corner with a .288/.331/.456 line, five home runs, and 35 runs batted in since May 30.

Medina was the centerpiece of any rumored trade deadline deal for Manny Machado, but he remains a Phillie. Medina’s ERA climbed to 4.39 from 3.01 this year, but his 3.79 fielding-independent pitching and 3.61 strikeout-to-walk ratio indicate his struggles may not be all his fault.

Ortiz had a breakout season in short-season Williamsport last year but has taken a major step back this year. He is hitting just .224 with a 31.7 percent strikeout rate in 98 Low-A games this year. The 19-year-old got a $4 million signing bonus back in 2015, so he will get plenty of chances to turn things around.

Romero started off the year poorly in Double-A Reading but was eventually able to adjust. In 11 starts since May 20, he has a 2.44 ERA, 24.5% strikeout rate, and 1.09 WHIP. He hasn’t pitched since July 14 due to a strained oblique.

De Los Santos is the only player on this list at Triple-A. He has a 2.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 21.6% strikeout rate, and 8.3% walk rate in 20 starts for Lehigh Valley this season. He hasn’t fared well in the majors so far with a 6.00 ERA, 1.80 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and 1.67 WHIP in three appearances.

Next. Luis Avilan the final piece to the Phillies puzzle. dark

Howard has impressed in Low-A Lakewood in 21 starts this year. Last year’s second-round pick has a 3.92 ERA, 2.82 fielding-independent pitching, 31.1% strikeout rate, and 9.5% walk rate this season. After his strong full-season debut, Howard should rise up the rankings.
