Another major trade chip falls out of the Phillies reach

New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia has been the topic of trade rumors, and it appears he will be moved in the very near future. While the Phillies have been connected to the 28-year-old reliever, they are not being named as the likely team to land him.

ESPN’s Buster Olney first reported Friday night that the Mets were working on finalizing a Familia trade.

Oakland has been named reports, and subsequent reports have eliminated the Giants, Astros, Cubs, and Red Sox from contention.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal also reported Oakland is one of the teams working on a deal for Familia, but nothing has been completed at this time.

More from Phillies Rumors

Familia has a 2.88 ERA in 40 games this year with 17 saves in 21 opportunities and is two years removed from a league-high 51 saves.

Major League Baseball suspended Familia for the first 15 games of the season following a domestic violence accusation that did not result in charges. Familia has also dealt with a shoulder injury this year.

Philadelphia has fallen short in several trade negotiations this summer, most notably with shortstop Manny Machado. They’ve also missed out on Padres closer Brad Hand, who went to Cleveland for the Indians top prospect.

Recent reports have heightened Philadelphia’s link to Orioles closer Zach Britton, who is coming off an achillies injury.

The Phillies bullpen is coming off a fantastic evening after Jake Arrieta failed to pitch out of the fourth inning in the second-half opener against San Diego. Austin Davis, Victor Arano, Tommy Hunter, Pat Neshek, and Adam Morgan combined for 5.2 shutout innings with eight strikeouts in an 11-5 win at home.
