Another closer is being lined to the Phillies in trade rumors

New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia is a valuable commodity on the trade market, and the Phillies reportedly have interest in the 28-year-old reliever.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that Philadelphia is among a couple of teams, including the San Francisco Giants, interested in the Dominican reliever.

While the interest is there from Philadelphia’s front office, Olney says they may wait until the Manny Machado/Zach Britton situation in Baltimore is finalized.

Familia is 17-21 in save opportunities this year after missing multiple weeks due to a shoulder injury and a suspension.

The righty was suspended 15 games by Major League Baseball for a domestic violence allegation brought on after an October 31 charge that did not result in charges being brought on due to a lack of evidence.

According to the New York Times, “officers observed the scratches and bruises and determined that they appeared to be recent, but his wife told them that Familia had not hit her.”

On the mound this year, Familia has been especially effective against righties this year with opponents hitting .185 in 92 plate appearances compared to lefties hitting .288 in 79 plate appearances.

In 17 career appearances pitching in Citizens Bank Park Familia has a 2.00 ERA with only one home run allowed. Phillies hitters have hit just .209 in those appearances against Familia, who has a 1.3 WAR this season for New York.

Philadelphia could certainly use another veteran arm in the back of their bullpen despite the successful return of Pat Neshek. Overall the bullpen has a 3.98 ERA, 17th in baseball, a 1.31 WHIP, 15th in the league, and has blown the fourth-fewest games in baseball with 11.
