Phillies Prospect Report: Sixto Sanchez pitching lights out
Several Phillies prospects are trending upwards as the season continues on
The MLB Draft is this week and the Phillies will be taking inventory of their prospect pool before making their selection at pick number three.

Sixto Sanchez, RHP, Clearwater
He’s only 19 years old, but the Phillies have something special in Sixto Sanchez. As of June 3rd, Sanchez was 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA in 8 starts.
Sanchez has given up two runs in his last four outings, including a 7 inning complete game shutout out on June 3 against Florida.
On May 25th, Sanchez tossed 6.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits, and striking out 10 batters.
He has great stuff and is still developing into his body. Sixto is one of the Phillies top prospects. and will be a huge part of the Phillies future and the starting rotation will have a dominant two-headed monster for years with Nola and Sanchez.
Trending Up: Jan Hernandez, OF, Reading
Hernandez is flying under the radar right now as a result of the Phillies depth in the outfield, but he is quietly having a nice season in AA.
The 23-year-old from Puerto Rico was hitting .321 as of June 2 with nine doubles, four home runs, and 26 RBIs.
He has a 5-RBI game this year and has shown some speed with a triple and four stolen bases.
There may not be room at the top of the organization for Hernandez, but he has been very good this year. This is the first time he has been able to find consistent success. He still has to develop further, but this is a good start for him.
Trending Down: José Tavares, RHP, Reading
Tavares has been back and forth between Reading and Lehigh Valley over the last year or so. He started this season on the disabled list and made his first start of the year on May 22 against New Hampshire.
In that start, he pitched very well, throwing 5.1 shutout innings and only giving up two hits. Since then, however, Tavares has not pitched as well.
On May 27 against Portland, he only lasted three innings and gave up two runs in a loss. His last time out on June 1 against Richmond was even worse. He pitched 4.0 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, bringing his ERA up to 5.84.
It is still early in the year for him, but so far, Tavares has not been great for the Fightin Phils.
Trending Down: Jose Gomez, 2B, Clearwater
Gomez was acquired from the Rockies in the Pat Neshek trade last July and has not been great since. Gomez has had some trouble squaring up the ball this year. As of June 3, he was hitting .199 with just 3 extra base hits in 42 games.
His approach at the plate can get better. He has 29 hits and 4 walks in 146 at-bats. His on-base percentage is just .225. He doesn’t strike out a lot with just 24 punch outs this year, but his four walks are worrisome.

If he doesn’t hit, he still needs to find a way to get on base and he hasn’t been able to do that this year.
The Phillies aren’t depending on him panning out, but they don’t need to keep him around after this year if he doesn’t turn things around.
