Phillies rookie Rhys Hoskins capped off his historic first month by winning Major League Baseball’s Rookie of the Month award.
Rhys Hoskins has been the savior of the Phillies season since being promoted and he is starting to be recognized at a league-wide level. On Sunday, Major League Baseball announced that Hoskins is the National League’s Rookie of the Month for August.
Since making his debut in August, Hoskins has easily been Philadelphia’s best hitters and among the best in all of the league. Hoskins became the quickest player to 10 home runs to start off their major-league career. His OPS of 1.149 in August is the third-highest of any player in their first month of action.
As a whole in August, Hoskins hit for a .304/.402/.747 line with 11 home runs and 25 runs batted in through 22 games. He walked 12 times and struck out 14 times in 92 plate appearances. His 190 wRC+ for the month of August was seventh-highest among all major-league hitters with 90 or more plate appearances.

Hoskins was also named the International League’s Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year. In 115 games before being called up to the majors, Hoskins hit .284/.385/.581 with 29 home runs and 91 runs batted in Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The news of this award comes just a day after Hoskins had to leave a game early after being hit by a 98 mph fastball on the hand. X-rays came back negative but Hoskins is day-to-day with the injury.
Manager Pete Mackanin said they will take the injury one day at a time. Hoskins is out of the lineup Sunday after feeling too much soreness taking batting practice.

Earlier on during Saturday’s game, utility man Pedro Florimon suffered a dislocated ankle stepping on first base. The injury was ugly and he spent the night in a Miami hospital. Mackanin said Florimon is likely done for the season. He was hitting .348/.388/.478 in 15 games since being called up.
Jake Thompson and Cameron Perkins were both called up to the major-league team Sunday. Perkins will replace Florimon and started Sunday in center field while Thompson started on the mound, filling in for Jerad Eickhoff, who is now on the 60-day disabled list.
