The Phillies bullpen corps shrank Tuesday as Jeanmar Gomez was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow impingement.
Tuesday the Phillies announced that relief pitcher Jeanmar Gomez was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow impingement. The move is retroactive to May 6, two days after his last appearance May 4.
To replace Gomez on the 25-man roster, the team recalled utility man Ty Kelly from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Kelly was demoted when Jake Thompson was called up to the bullpen Friday. Gomez’s injury likely had something to do with the trade for Casey Fien earlier Tuesday.

Elbow impingement is defined as “a condition characterized by compression and damage to soft tissue (such as cartilage) situated at the back of, or within the elbow joint” by PhysioAdvisor.com. Treatment for this kind of injury is largely physiotherapeutic with a gradual return to action after rehabbing the elbow. If that doesn’t work, a cortisone shot may be administered. Surgery is also an option but is usually a last resort.

The timetable for Gomez’s return is uncertain at this point. Considering the type of this injury, it doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that has a definite time the elbow takes to heal. It will likely be touch-and-go for a majority of the recovery process. The fact that Gomez is on the 10-day disabled list shows the team doesn’t think Gomez will miss too much time.
Gomez has struggled for most of this season. He lost the closer’s job after giving up five runs through his first three outings, including two home runs. Since then he hasn’t fared any better with his ERA for the season sitting at 7.94 with a 1.76 WHIP.
Gomez’s -0.3 fWAR is second-worst on the team among pitchers behind only Adam Morgan.
In his last outing against the Cubs, Gomez gave up no runs on two hits and one walk in two innings.

With Gomez out for some time, expect to see Mark Leiter, Jr. and the aforementioned Thompson get larger roles in the bullpen.
