Phillies Rumors: Team Releases SP David Buchanan
After a surprising rookie season, David Buchanan never again found his niche with the Phillies. Now, he’s looking for work elsewhere.
In an unsurprising move on Wednesday, the Phillies announced they’ve released SP David Buchanan. Buchanan was waived last week prior to the announcement of the teams 40-man roster.

While no fan may miss Buchanan, he showed some promise (it was a really bad time, and anything positive was awesome) his rookie year. Posting a 3.75 ERA (with a 4.27 FIP albeit), and going 6-8 in 20 starts (117.2 IP).

This stretch landed Buchanan a rotation spot the following season. Buchanan would go 2-9 with a 6.99 ERA in 2015, never to see big league time with the big league club again.
Buchanan, 27, will now be eligible for free agency. With his starter experience (192.1 IP over 35 starts) he could sign a minor league deal with another organization, however his 4.68 FIP, 5.4 K/9, and 1.508 WHIP suggest he doesn’t bring much to the table.
This move followed the teams trade of RP Jimmy Cordero, both of whom were waived last week. Like Cordero, Buchanan’s release does not open up a 40-man spot.
The Phils have been pretty active so far, to whichever extent, and that comes as no surprise with the potential work stoppage looming. Will more moves come before the CBA deadline (December 1st), or is this it until further notice?

If you have your sights set on a major free agent (anyone with a draft pick attached), save yourself the stress. The potential lockout is going to hold up the major free agent market, but it could speed up the trade market, where the Phils could be plenty active.
