The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the visiting Miami Marlins on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park thanks to the efforts of a big trade chip.

The Phillies received a tremendous starting pitching performance from their most obvious and valuable trade chip, Jeremy Hellickson in defeating the Miami Marlins by a 4-1 score.

Hellickson (7-7) scattered five hits while allowing just one earned run. He struck out eight and walked no one, with 66 of his 102 pitches going for strikes in an outing that served to highlight everything that makes him valuable to potential trade partners.

From the start, Hellickson was in command in delivering his 11th Quality Start among his 20 outings thus far. He is not likely to have too many more in a Phillies uniform.

Also shining on the night was popular veteran Carlos Ruiz, who delivered a 2-4 performance while calling a great game, working well with Hellickson and highlighting his own value to those potential Phillies trade partners.

Another Phillies player square in the spotlight as the MLB non-waiver trade deadline approaches just a week and a half from now is outfielder Peter Bourjos, who singled to lead off the game and came around to score on a two-run homer by rookie Tyler Goeddel.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Goeddel singled home Cesar Hernandez to make it a 3-0 game. With one out in the top of the 5th, the Marlins got to Hellickson with a solo homer from Chris Johnson to make it 3-1, but that would be all they could muster.

The Phillies got a final run in the bottom of the 6th when Freddy Galvis singled and Hernandez doubled to start the frame. One out later, Bourjos delivered with a sac fly to score Galvis and make the final 4-1 score.

Jeanmar Gomez came on in the 9th inning to record his 26th Save of the year, and the Phillies gave themselves a chance to gain a split in this four game series in Thursday’s finale.
