Cole Hamels Going After Taylor Swift

What’s that? Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels going after Taylor Swift? What interest would the 31-year old baseball star have with the 25-year old country-pop singer?

Don’t worry, it’s nothing romantic. Cole is still very happily married to his wife, the former Heidi Strobel of TV’s “Survivor” fame. Rather than a romantic hookup, Cole is looking for a charitable one.

For the last five years, The Hamels Foundation, founded by Cole and Heidi, holds a charitable fundraising event called “Diamonds & Denim” at which the couple along with other members of the team and various celebrities raise money for charity.

The event draws its name from that theme for the night: dress is denim, and you are encouraged to accessorize with your best “blinge”, thus the diamonds part.

The reference to Ms. Swift comes from a Tweet sent out on the Foundation’s Twitter account yesterday stating that they would love to have her perform at the 2015 event, playfully adding in hashtags “what are the chances” and “can only say no” at the end.

Last year’s event, held on August 21st at “Vie” (600 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia), was headlined by the country group Lady Antebellum.

The event includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a 3-course dinner, and both silent and live auctions. All guests receive a take-home gift bag, and chances to win both diamond jewelry and designer jeans. There is also, of course, a chance to mingle with the athletes and entertainers.

The Hamels Foundation is a non-profit whose mission is “dedicated to enriching the lives of children through the power of education by giving them the tools they need to achieve their goals“, both here in the United States, as well as in founding a school in Malawi, Africa.

The 2015 “Diamonds & Denim” event is scheduled for June 25th. Will the mega-talented Taylor Swift be a part of the festivities? If there’s one thing we should have learned from 2008, it’s don’t bet against Cole Hamels.
