Why Blue Jays-Phillies Daulton Varsho trade would be perfect cure to outfield disease

Despite Brandon Marsh's All-Star nod, it has been nothing short of a rough year for the Philadelphia Phillies outfield. From Adolis García's season-ending injury to Justin Crawford and the Triple-A tag team out in right, unable to read launch angles and misreading fly balls that should be routine outs, they find themselves with one of the worst outfields in baseball.

So, with the MLB trade deadline approaching on Monday evening, the Phillies' President of Baseball Operations, Dave Dombrowski, could make an entertaining move this weekend. Recent rumors have connected him to former Phillie Gary Varsho's son, current Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho, who could bolster a floundering Phillies outfield.

As a former Gold Glove center fielder and with roots that connect him to a Philadelphia baseball legend (not his dad), it feels as though Varsho and the Phillies have been linked to one another cosmically forever.

While it's been a down year for Varsho, he would be a pretty cheap rental and a clear upgrade for the Phillies both offensively and defensively. Is he a big needle mover? Not necessarily, but if you look at his sample playing time against Philadelphia, including spring training, his grit and defensive prowess could fit nicely in the middle of the Phillies lineup.

With the trade deadline looming, could the Phillies make a move with the Blue Jays?

He hits from the left side of the plate, which might be his only downside. Despite this being a down year, he could slot in pretty well batting sixth or seventh, giving the latter half of the lineup a little extra pop. In 2025, Varsho went off in the second half of the season to have a 12 home run August and September to hit 20 on the year, so even with a slash line of .247/.308/.383 and seven home runs on the current season, there's a chance that he could find his groove in a hitter-friendly ballpark such as Citizens Bank.

But where the Phillies need help the most, he still excels. Defensively in 2026, he has +4 Outs Above Average and has the versatility to play around all three outfield positions. This would not only help the current -11 OAA the Phillies' outfield currently has, but would give the platoon of Gabriel Rincones Jr. and Bryan De La Cruz a break from splitting everyday play in right. A deal would also give rookie Justin Crawford a chance to get a breather defensively, while still giving the Phillies the consistent offensive production he has throughout his rookie year.

Varsho is also no stranger to postseason play, as a member of the 2025 American League championship Blue Jays roster, which fought through two separate Game 7s to get to the edge of victory in the Fall Classic. If this group of Phillies has proven anything, it's that the same kind of gritty fight will be needed if 2026 really is the year they go "all in" in hopes of bringing the World Series trophy back to Philadelphia. So why not go and get someone who has been there less than a year ago before he hits the free agent market?
